THE FOUNDATION

Mafakathini school, South Africa Mafakathini, South Africa

For my Eagle Scout project, I led the renovation of a school for disabled children in Mafakathini, South Africa. Together with the community, we raised over $10,000 to make lasting improvements for the students.

The teacher explained that for these children, this wasn't just a school. It was one of the only places where they could feel loved and cared for, because their opportunities in the outside world were so limited. That's what made this matter — it wasn't just about desks or murals. It was about creating a space that showed them they belonged.

What the project included:

  • Desks and chairs so kids no longer had to sit on the floor
  • Electricity installed and insulation added for cold months
  • A fully stocked kitchen with utensils and cooking equipment
  • Renovated bathrooms and a sidewalk for wheelchair access
  • Painted all classrooms and created bright murals
  • Personalized backpacks and school supplies for every child
  • Sleeping pads so kids could rest during the day
  • Playground swings, games, and toys
  • A community garden to provide fresh food
